Most people think about rekeying only after something goes wrong. The more useful framing is that rekeying is a scheduled maintenance task, like changing a smoke alarm battery. Keys accumulate quietly over the life of a property, passing through builders, agents, cleaners, tenants, relatives and contractors, and no register exists for any of it. A rekey draws a line under that history in a few minutes per cylinder and restores a position you can actually describe.
Tenancy Turnover Rekeying for Truth Or Consequences, NM Landlords
Between tenancies is the obvious moment. The outgoing tenant may have made copies for a partner, a friend or a housemate, all perfectly innocently, and none of those copies come back with the returned set.
Landlords who build rekeying into the turnover checklist alongside cleaning and inventory never have to make a judgement call about it. It also demonstrates reasonable care if a dispute ever arises about access.
Bulk Rekeying Across Truth Or Consequences, NM Portfolios
Managing agents with multiple properties benefit from routing the work as a single visit. A technician can move through a block or a street methodically, and keying each property to its own distinct key while holding a documented record for the office.
Where a management key is wanted across a portfolio, a master system can be designed so staff carry one key while each tenant key opens only their own door.
Rekeying costs a fraction of replacement and takes minutes per door. If you cannot name everyone holding a key to a property, that is your answer.
Rekeying After Key Loss or a Security Incident in Truth Or Consequences, NM
A lost key attached to anything identifying the address is a genuine risk and should be treated as one. The same applies after a burglary, an attempted entry, or a relationship breakdown where a key was held by someone who should no longer have access.
These calls are handled on the same day wherever possible, because the interval between the loss and the rekey is the entire window of exposure.

What Rekeying Does Not Solve in Truth Or Consequences, NM
Rekeying controls who holds a working key. It does not upgrade a cylinder that would fail to a snapping attack, reinforce a strike plate fixed with short screws, or fix a door that has dropped in its frame.
An honest technician tells you where each of those stands while the cylinder is out. You can then decide whether to rekey alone or to pair it with the upgrade the door actually needs.
